As the Lead Designer for the Microsoft Global Packaging Group, I had the privilege of managing and working on numerous projects for both the software and hardware teams. I designed and oversaw the structural packaging refresh for Windows, Office, PC hardware, and Xbox, as well as the cost reduction initiatives. Furthermore, I was responsible for delivering the structural packaging vision for the Surface brand. Over the years packaging has evolved to become an integral part of the overall brand experience of a product. Each package is meticulously executed, taking into account several factors that influence the final result, such as materials, colors, textures, presentation, construction, and unboxing. All of these elements contribute to the overall user experience. Let's not forget that cost and sustainability are also critical considerations. To me, a great design is one that strikes a perfect balance among all these factors.

Surface Studio Packaging
Whats in the Box. The surface studio package was 32 pounds and included the above objects. The product was an all in one large 27 inch display that shares the category space with Apple Computers .
product orientation in the box drives packaging volume. You can see below in the carousel that clearly we have a winner. Through thoughtful design and thorough investigation we managed to double the pallet count and improved not only cost but carbon footprint.
With the weight and size of the product, we new we would need an easy way to transport this large package as comfortably as possible. We decided to create a clean simple handle, something that would protect the user from the sharp edges of the die cut paper and be comfortable when lifting the 32 pound box.

Each component in the package is carefully choreographed to be removed in steps. Simply lay the box down on its back, peal the protective seals located along on the front edge below the handle and then with your thumb push in the handle and lift the lid. No annoying pieces of foam to remove, just simply lift the sides of the display and remove the product. Inside the box you will find a series of lift tabs to help with the removal of each small component box.
